Golfer David McDonald, an 85-year-old resident of Fall River, N.S., recently achieved a remarkable feat by shooting an even-par 72 at Ashburn Golf Club’s challenging new course. Known for its long layout and large, fast greens, the course presented a tough test for McDonald, who usually plays from the silver tees at nearly 5,800 yards.
McDonald, who typically golfs three to four times a week and prefers walking the course, considers shooting his age in golf a significant accomplishment. His ability to surpass this milestone by 13 strokes is truly impressive. Despite facing some past health challenges, McDonald remains physically strong and shows no signs of slowing down.
His friend, Peter Stirling, praised McDonald’s dedication to fitness and recounted the golfer’s exceptional performance on the course. McDonald’s consistency in hitting straight drives, precise bunker shots, and clutch putts contributes to his consistent scoring in the high 70s.
Having taken up golf at the age of 30 while serving in the air force in Cape Breton, McDonald quickly excelled in the sport, winning three national titles during his military career. Following his retirement in 1995, McDonald relocated to Fall River and continued his golfing success, winning the provincial senior men’s championship multiple times.
With a total of 17 holes-in-one to his name, McDonald’s pursuit of his 18th ace has become a notable quest. He attributes his longevity and success in golf to a combination of healthy lifestyle choices and regular exercise. McDonald’s passion for the game and commitment to staying active have been key factors in his enduring golfing prowess.
As a beloved figure in the golfing community, McDonald’s achievements and dedication to the sport continue to inspire players of all ages.
