Lucy Powell Wins Labour Deputy Leadership, Vows Bold Action

Date:

Lucy Powell expressed her gratitude to the Labour Party members for electing her as the Deputy Leader, emphasizing the honor it bestowed upon her. She mentioned her intention to decline a return to a government position to freely voice her opinions on the party’s direction while in office. Powell emerged victorious in the Labour deputy leadership contest with 54% of the votes, surpassing Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, who secured 46% of the votes.

In her victory speech, Powell stressed the importance of providing hope and enacting substantial changes that the nation is yearning for. She highlighted the need for the party to define its purpose clearly, demonstrate its alignment with certain values, and uphold its Labour principles.

Powell’s election followed Angela Rayner’s resignation due to a property purchase oversight. Powell garnered 87,407 votes from Labour Party members and affiliates, while Phillipson received 73,536 votes. Despite these numbers, the voter turnout was relatively low at 16.6%.

Addressing her colleagues, Powell commended Bridget Phillipson for her talent and dedication, expressing eagerness to collaborate with her as Education Secretary. She also praised Angela Rayner for her contributions to the party and the country, acknowledging the significant role Rayner has played.

Powell emphasized the critical juncture the Labour Party finds itself in, echoing Keir Starmer’s call to action outlined in his recent conference speech. She underscored the need for the party to confront rising divisions and discontent by presenting a progressive and inclusive political narrative that addresses the country’s challenges effectively.

As Deputy Leader, Powell pledged to amplify the voices of the public who feel the current government is lacking boldness in delivering promised changes. She vowed to champion Labour values and advocate for a more assertive approach in addressing societal inequalities.

Powell concluded by emphasizing the historical significance of Labour governments in enacting positive changes for the country. She highlighted the party’s legacy of championing workers’ rights, economic equality, and social progress, pledging to uphold these values and work towards a better future for all.
