The family of a teenage boy who was reportedly attacked with petrol and set on fire has shared details of his severe injuries. Jacob Thompson, 19, was approached by a man and two women on Cowper Street in Coonabarabran on Monday, October 13, around 6pm. One of them allegedly poured a substance on Jacob, causing him to catch fire. Bystanders managed to put out the flames before Jacob was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Jacob’s family disclosed that he suffered extensive burns covering 32% of his body, including severe third-degree burns on his face, torso, arms, back, and legs. Due to the critical nature of his injuries and airway damage, Jacob was airlifted to Sydney, where he was placed in a medically induced coma on life support.
Currently, Jacob is under intensive care at Concord Hospital in Sydney, with his family providing constant support. The family described the incident as deeply traumatic, leaving lasting physical and emotional scars that will require extensive healing.
Authorities reported that a 45-year-old woman, a 19-year-old man, and a 17-year-old girl were arrested in connection with the attack. The man faces charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and affray, while the woman was charged with affray. They were denied bail, while the teenage girl was released pending further investigation.
