During the Mexico City Grand Prix, Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson faced a startling situation when he had to slow down to avoid two marshals crossing the track. This incident occurred on the third lap of the race, following a debris report at turn one.
Unaware that Lawson had pitted for a front wing change due to damage from the initial lap, the marshals were instructed to wait until all cars had passed turn one before entering the track to clear the debris. As Lawson re-entered the track and approached the first corner, he encountered the unexpected sight of two marshals running across, causing him to slow down abruptly to avoid a collision.
Expressing his shock over the radio, Lawson voiced his concern about the dangerous situation he faced. Race engineer Ernesto Desiderio praised Lawson for his quick reaction in avoiding a potential disaster.
The FIA spokesperson stated that an investigation was underway to understand the events leading up to the incident and the communication with the marshals. They clarified that once Lawson had pitted, the marshals’ deployment instructions were canceled, and safety measures were implemented in the area.
Despite retiring from the race due to damage, Lawson remained shaken by the incident, highlighting the danger he encountered on the live track. He emphasized the need for a thorough explanation from his Racing Bulls team regarding the circumstances and stressed the importance of preventing such incidents in the future.
The Mexico City Grand Prix was ultimately won by Lando Norris, who now leads the championship standings with McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri trailing closely in fifth place with four rounds remaining.
