“Ronan’s Law: Government Bans Ninja Swords, Targets Online Weapon Sales”

Date:

On a sunny evening in June 2022, my son, Ronan, was ambushed by two sixteen-year-old boys while walking home. They viciously attacked him with a 22-inch ninja sword, inflicting fatal wounds to his abdomen and heart.

The assailants had purchased the deadly weapon online, using a fake ID to collect it from the post office on the day of the tragic incident. Shocked by the ease with which such lethal items were being sold, I sought answers and change. How could retailers distribute weapons designed for harm without facing repercussions?

My encounter with Sir Keir Starmer, then Leader of the Opposition, at a café in Euston, marked a turning point. Despite my initial skepticism about politicians, I found in him a compassionate listener to a grieving mother’s plea for justice. The sale of the ninja sword that claimed Ronan’s life, with no consequences for the retailer under the previous administration, spurred me to action.

Assured by Sir Keir Starmer’s commitment, the subsequent ban on ninja swords by the Prime Minister, following the Labour Government’s rise to power, was a promise fulfilled. Through collaborative efforts with government officials, Ronan’s Law was enacted, not only prohibiting ninja swords but also instituting stringent measures.

The introduction of fines for tech companies neglecting to remove knife-related content, penalties for underage knife sales, and enhanced ID verification processes signify a decisive clampdown on the online weapons market. The closure of loopholes has held retailers accountable, preventing a repeat of the tragedy that befell my son.

The successful knife surrender amnesty scheme, launched in tandem with Ronan’s Law, witnessed over 7,000 weapons surrendered, including ninja swords, through strategic initiatives across high-risk areas. The Government’s dedicated initiatives, such as the amnesty van and community involvement, have significantly reduced knife-enabled crimes.

Notably, the establishment of Ronan’s Law has left an indelible mark, with a dedicated amnesty bin in Wolverhampton serving as a poignant tribute to my son’s memory. The Government’s holistic approach, including the Young Futures program, underscores a proactive stance on violence prevention, emphasizing early intervention and community engagement.

As a bereaved mother advocating for change, I commend the Government’s unwavering commitment to combating knife crime and safeguarding our youth. The transformative impact of Ronan’s Law underscores the imperative for sustained collaboration between authorities, campaigners, and communities to build on existing progress and drive further change.

I express profound gratitude to the Government for enacting robust legislation in honor of my son. The resolute pursuit of halving knife crime within a decade reflects a beacon of hope for a safer future, underscoring the enduring legacy of Ronan’s Law.
