The horse racing community is in mourning following the tragic passing of apprentice jockey Tommie Jakes at the age of 19.
A joint statement from the Injured Jockeys’ Fund and Professional Jockeys Association announced the heartbreaking news on Thursday. They expressed deep sadness over the death of Tommie Jakes, a licensed apprentice jockey who passed away at his home near Newmarket.
Tommie, described as a beloved son, brother, and valued member of George Boughey’s racing team, had recently ridden at Nottingham and was scheduled to ride for trainer Ismail Mohammed at Chelmsford.
Having garnered attention as a promising young talent, Tommie Jakes had achieved 59 wins since 2023 out of 519 races. His first victory as an apprentice came aboard Suzi’s Connoisseur under Jane Chapple-Hyam’s guidance at Lingfield.
With a family background in horse racing, Tommie’s passion for the sport led him to follow in his father’s footsteps. His notable accomplishments included a significant win on Fouroneohfever at Catterick under George Boughey’s training.
The British Horseracing Authority’s acting chief executive, Brant Dunshea, expressed devastation over the loss of Tommie, highlighting his talent and the outpouring of tributes from trainers. The racing community mourns the loss and offers support to those affected.
In a heartfelt message on social media, George Boughey’s team expressed their deep sorrow over Tommie’s passing, remembering him as a skilled rider and a compassionate individual.
