A well-known tower in Italy has collapsed, resulting in one person sustaining severe injuries and others being trapped. The Torre dei Conti, a 29-meter structure located in Rome, collapsed earlier today.
The tower was in the process of being renovated when the incident occurred, leading to one worker being hospitalized. Two other workers suffered minor injuries, as reported by the ANSA news agency.
During the collapse, three workers were on scaffolding supporting the tower and became trapped. Firefighters successfully rescued them using a ladder truck.
Luca Cari, a spokesperson for the national fire department, informed Reuters that emergency services were working to free an individual trapped under the debris.
Videos circulating on social media captured dust clouds emerging from the tower. The Rome Fire Brigade dispatched three operational teams, two ladder trucks, and specialized units to the site, as detailed by Euro News.
Officials confirmed on social media that firefighters involved in the rescue mission were safe. A statement indicated, “Firefighters are unharmed following the second collapse at the Torre dei Conti in central Rome. Rescue efforts are ongoing.”
Constructed in 1238 by Pope Innocent III as a fortified residence for his family, the tower is situated near the Colosseum. It was undergoing restoration funded by Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
According to Roma Si Transforma, the renovation aimed to address various issues, including significant problems identified on the building’s external wall. The renovation project aimed to rectify widespread disintegration of construction elements, the growth of vegetation affecting the masonry, and vandalism damage.
The interior of the building is deteriorating, with issues such as collapsed modern false ceilings, damaged window and door frames, and deteriorated decorative paintings.
The restoration work was projected to conclude by the second quarter of 2026.
