A woman working at a daycare has been taken into custody and formally accused of causing harm to a three-month-old infant by fracturing the child’s arm, as per authorities.
The individual in question, identified as Ashley Karschnick, 32, reportedly lost her composure due to the baby’s persistent crying whenever she handled her, leading her to forcefully thrust the infant against a crib, resulting in the arm fracture.
Karschnick faces a single felony charge of child abuse for recklessly inflicting injury in relation to the incident that allegedly occurred at Lily Pad Day Care in Fond du Lac. Law enforcement responded to a pediatric hospital subsequent to the infant’s admission with a broken arm, according to a legal document sourced by a local news outlet.
Reportedly, medical documents from Children’s Wisconsin indicate the infant sustained a specific type of fracture consistent with physical abuse as determined by a medical professional.
Following an examination which encompassed various interviews and a meticulous examination of surveillance recordings, authorities discovered that the defendant was present in the baby area at the daycare during the period of the presumed abuse. Investigators noted a visible escalation of frustration in the defendant throughout the day from the surveillance footage reviewed.
The incident that led to the baby’s injury reportedly occurred around 12:30 p.m., based on information from Express.com. Allegedly, the footage captures Karschnick lifting and forcefully dropping the baby into the crib with significant impact.
Approximately 10 minutes later, the footage purportedly shows Karschnick returning to the crib to attempt to comfort the baby to no avail, as the infant’s cries intensified.
According to the legal statement, the baby’s arm displayed signs of dysfunction following the incident. Despite the video evidence, Karschnick refuted the accusation, attributing the crib’s movement to accidental contact. When questioned about the baby’s distressing cries, she reportedly stated that the infant’s reaction was consistent with her behavior each time she interacted with her.
Karschnick is presently detained and has met the conditions for a $2,500 bond. During a recent court session on October 28, her legal team advocated for a modification to permit her presence in public places where children are present, however, the judge upheld the existing bond terms according to Wbay reports.
