A helicopter transporting officials from a Russian defense plant crashed into a private residence today, engulfed in flames, resulting in the tragic death of four individuals aboard. Three survivors were rescued from the damaged Ka-226 aircraft and promptly taken to a hospital in Russia for treatment. Reports indicate that one of the survivors is in critical condition. The helicopter was carrying high-ranking personnel from Kizlyar Electromechanical Plant, known for producing ground control and diagnostic systems, as well as equipment for Sukhoi and MiG attack aircraft, and recently subjected to sanctions due to the conflict in Ukraine.
The exact cause of the crash, labeled a “catastrophe” by the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency, remains uncertain. The incident occurred in the village of Achi-Su in the southern region of Dagestan. Witnesses reported that the helicopter, ablaze in the sky, appeared to be looking for a suitable spot for an emergency landing before ultimately crashing uncontrollably onto a house.
Fortunately, there were no casualties reported on the ground. Eyewitnesses described the helicopter descending and igniting upon impact near the Zhemchuzhina recreation center, situated close to the Caspian Sea. Initially mistaken for a tourist helicopter, it was later revealed that the passengers were employees of the defense plant. Israfil Israfilov, the head of the Dagestan Regional Control Center, stated, “It was not a tourist helicopter. There were no tourists on board. Yes, there are fatalities and injuries. The circumstances are being investigated.”
The Ka-226 helicopter is commonly used by the Russian military, national guard, and defense industry entities. It was en route from Kizlyar to Izberbash along the Caspian Sea when the tragic crash occurred.
Efforts are underway to clear the wreckage promptly to determine the root cause of the accident. According to news agency TASS, a “technical malfunction” is being considered as the probable reason for the crash.
Footage from security cameras captured the harrowing moment of the helicopter’s descent and subsequent ignition. A bystander was seen fleeing from the scene, presumably seeking assistance. Witness statements indicated that the helicopter grazed a pier with its tail section during an attempted landing, ascended briefly, and then crashed near a beachside property.
