Dan recently recounted the moment when he learned about the man discovering £5.7 million inside the safe, and how the original owner eventually reclaimed the unit after locating the buyer. Nevertheless, the fortunate individual walked away significantly richer with $1 million (£767,000) in hand.
A seasoned veteran in flipping old storage lockers, Dan, aged 62, delved into this trade at a young age and co-established American Auctioneers with his wife Laura. Over the years, he has auctioned off various peculiar items, but none were as lucrative as the one yielding him millions in 2018.
In a YouTube video from November 2018, Dan shared an anecdote about a woman who disclosed to him at a charity event that she was acquainted with the person who purchased a storage unit containing a safe filled with $7.5 million (£5.7 million) in cash.
Following the discovery, the buyer received a “mysterious” call from the lawyer of the unit’s previous owner, offering a substantial sum of $600,000 (£455,400) to repurchase the unit along with its contents. Initially declining the proposal, the man eventually relented when the offer was doubled to $1.2 million (£910,700).
Though relinquishing the unit cost him $6 million (£4.5 million), he found solace in upholding his integrity by striking a fair deal. Dan posed the question to his audience about the ethical dilemma of keeping such a windfall, prompting varied perspectives, including his wife Laura’s preference for accepting the generous offer.
