“Train Collision in Slovakia: 11 Seriously Injured”

Date:

Two trains collided in western Slovakia on Sunday, resulting in 11 individuals sustaining serious injuries, as per officials.

The incident occurred near Pezinok in the Bratislava region when Train Tatran 620, en route from Kosice to Bratislava, crashed into REX 1814 heading from Nitra to the capital. Reports suggest that one of the trains went through a red signal and rear-ended the other.

According to a spokesperson from University Hospital Bratislava, two patients are currently undergoing surgery, with expectations of more individuals needing surgical intervention.

Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok confirmed that 11 people were seriously injured and hospitalized, while many others suffered minor injuries. The trains were reportedly carrying around 800 passengers, predominantly students.

Both train operators tested negative for alcohol and drugs, as stated by a spokesperson from the Bratislava regional police.

Ivan Bednarok, head of Slovak railway service ZSR, described the incident as extraordinary, emphasizing that one train violated safety protocols by passing a red signal, leading to the collision with the second express train at a speed exceeding 100 km/h.

Over 70 firefighters and 60 police officers swiftly responded to the scene, utilizing evacuation buses from the Prison and Judicial Guard Corps to transport passengers.

A passenger recounted the experience, mentioning being abruptly thrown forward during the collision.

Prime Minister Robert Fico took to Facebook, urging the public to prioritize the injured and avoid spreading unfounded rumors or negativity. He expressed solidarity with the victims and announced an emergency government meeting scheduled for Monday morning.

State-owned rail operator ZSSK confirmed the involvement of emergency services at the accident site, with ongoing collaboration between ZSSK, ZSR, police, and rescue teams.

ZSSK further stated that they are committed to conducting a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the incident, promising updates as soon as feasible.

Train services in the region were disrupted due to the collision, leading to significant delays, as per ZSSK warnings.

The collision follows a recent train accident in eastern Slovakia on October 13, where 91 individuals were injured, some severely.
