“Stable Fuel Prices Despite Wholesale Drop, Drivers Miss Savings”

Date:

Fuel prices at gas stations have remained relatively stable despite a significant drop in wholesale costs, as reported by the AA. The motoring organization stated that the wholesale price of petrol has decreased to levels last seen in 2021 before the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This drop in prices aligns with a dip in oil prices to below $60 per barrel, following potential peace talks between the two nations and projections of an oversupplied oil market next year.

Although the cost of petrol for garages has been decreasing since late November, drivers have yet to see substantial savings at the pump. The average petrol price has only slightly decreased, with the national average standing at 137.3p per liter, down by a marginal amount from the start of December. The AA estimated that if the full wholesale decrease had been passed on to consumers, drivers could have saved around £4.60 for a typical 55-liter tank fill-up.

Similarly, diesel prices have not fully reflected the drop in wholesale costs, with only a minor reduction in pump prices from the beginning of December to the current average of 146.6p per liter. This discrepancy comes as many motorists prepare for holiday travel, potentially missing out on significant savings.

The AA expressed concern over the delay in price adjustments and the lack of substantial decreases for consumers. While the reasons behind the lag remain unclear, the organization highlighted the frustration experienced by drivers and businesses. The Competition and Markets Authority previously raised alarms about retailers’ profit margins exceeding historical levels, signaling potential issues in the industry.

Gordon Balmer of the Petrol Retailers Association emphasized that wholesale price reductions are gradually impacting pump prices as the holiday season approaches.
