J D Wetherspoon has shared more information about its upcoming establishment in Europe, situated in a popular spot for British holidaymakers. The first European branch will be at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernandez Airport in Spain, frequently used by Brits traveling to Benidorm.
Alicante-Elche Airport is favored by British travelers due to its numerous budget airline connections. Airlines like easyJet, Jet2, and Ryanair operate direct flights from various UK airports to Alicante, with flight durations typically under three hours.
The new pub, named Castell de Santa Bàrbera, draws inspiration from an Alicante castle overlooking the sea. Wetherspoons has confirmed the official opening date for January 29 at 8am, offering a sunny setting for patrons to enjoy their favorite drinks.
Located in the airside departures, non-Schengen zone of Alicante Airport, the pub will be open seven days a week from 6am to 9pm, serving food until an hour before closing. Boasting nearly 1,000 square feet of indoor seating and an outdoor terrace, the venue will provide ample space for customers.
Wetherspoons has hinted at its menu offerings, which will include popular UK dishes such as breakfasts, burgers, and pizzas. Additionally, local Spanish delicacies like garlic prawns and Spanish omelettes will be available for those seeking a taste of Spain before departing.
Tim Martin, the founder and chairman of Wetherspoon, expressed excitement about the overseas expansion, anticipating a warm reception from travelers at Alicante Airport. The company aims to open more pubs abroad, particularly at airports, in the upcoming months and years.
Alicante-Elche Airport holds the title of the busiest airport in the Valencian region, handling a record 18.3 million passengers in 2024. Wetherspoons has also announced plans to establish four new outlets within Haven holiday parks by spring 2026, expanding its presence in popular tourist destinations.
With existing branches in Haven parks already serving thousands of meals and drinks, Wetherspoons is gearing up to launch six new pubs across the UK, including locations like Newcastle upon Tyne and Stockton-on-Tees. These additions will join the extensive network of over 800 Wetherspoon pubs already catering to customers across the UK.
