A British woman tragically lost her life in Portugal following a destructive ‘tornado’ that ravaged a campsite and hotel. The 85-year-old victim was residing at the HolaCamp site near Albufeira in the Algarve region. The unusual weather occurrence coincided with the impact of Storm Claudia on Portugal, resulting in 28 individuals sustaining injuries.
The identity of the deceased woman has not been disclosed yet. Initially reported missing, her body was subsequently discovered amidst the debris. Witnessing fierce winds hurling debris, other vacationers sought refuge from the chaos.
Authorities have labeled the incident as an “extreme wind phenomenon,” with Portugal’s meteorological agency indicating a strong likelihood of it being a tornado. According to a source from the weather agency, the event involved intense winds affecting both a campsite and a hotel.
Law enforcement confirmed that a total of 28 individuals, including British, Portuguese, and Spanish citizens aged between six and 86, suffered injuries. The Hotel Eden and the campsite bore the brunt of the twister, with 19 individuals injured at the hotel, including one severely, and two others seriously harmed at the campsite where the British victim was discovered.
Portuguese president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa extended his condolences to the victim’s family, attributing the fatality to Storm Claudia’s impact in Albufeira. Albufeira mayor Rui Cristina expressed his sympathy for the affected individuals and families, highlighting the municipality’s efforts to provide assistance and restore normalcy swiftly.
