Defence Secretary John Healey has issued a stern warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin after disclosing that a Russian spy vessel positioned near UK waters targeted RAF pilots with lasers.
Healey criticized Russia’s “extremely risky action” and emphasized that the UK has military strategies prepared in case the Yantar ship proceeds south. This marks the second occasion the ship has entered British waters in the past year to conduct surveillance on crucial underwater cables.
During a press briefing at Downing Street, Healey stated, “Currently, a Russian intelligence-gathering ship, the Yantar, is located at the outskirts of UK waters, north of Scotland, after entering broader UK waters in recent weeks. This vessel is specifically equipped for intelligence-gathering and mapping underwater cables.”
“We dispatched a Royal Navy frigate and RAF aircraft to monitor and trail the ship’s movements, during which the Yantar directed lasers at our pilots. This hostile Russian behavior is concerning, and this marks the ship’s second intrusion into UK waters this year.”
He further addressed Russia and Putin, saying, “Our message is clear – we are vigilant, aware of your actions, and prepared if the Yantar heads south this week.”
This cautionary statement follows a parliamentary committee’s alert that the UK lacks a comprehensive defense plan against military threats. Healey pledged to enhance Britain’s preparedness by identifying at least 13 potential locations for new arms facilities.
The Yantar is a component of Russia’s fleet targeting critical underwater cables linking the UK and Europe, which are vital for civilian and military communications, as well as energy transmission.
Healey highlighted that the ship possesses capabilities for surveillance during peacetime and sabotage in conflict scenarios. When questioned about the use of lasers by a Russian vessel against pilots for the first time, he responded, “This marks the initial instance of such action from Yantar against the British RAF.”
“We are treating this matter with utmost seriousness. I have revised the Navy’s rules of engagement to enable closer monitoring of Yantar’s activities in our waters. We are prepared with military responses.”
The Defence Secretary underscored the need for the UK to fortify its defenses in a time of evolving threats, stating, “We are facing a new era of uncertainty and danger. The landscape is shifting, becoming less predictable and more perilous.”
He emphasized recent global events, including conflicts in the Middle East, cyber threats, and Russian provocations, as indicators of the heightened risk environment. He called for a proactive defense approach, emphasizing the importance of robust military capabilities, allied support, and effective diplomacy.
Looking ahead to the upcoming Budget, Healey assured that there would be no regression in bolstering the UK’s armed forces.
