A soon-to-be father who fell into a coma following a traumatic car accident woke up briefly to accuse his pregnant girlfriend of causing his injuries. Daniel Waterman sustained severe injuries after the vehicle he and his partner, Leigha Mumby, were in crashed into a tree, resulting in broken bones, spinal trauma, and punctured lungs, leading him into a coma.
After months of unconsciousness, Daniel regained consciousness and managed to convey a distressing message to investigators using a whiteboard due to his limited ability to speak. He disclosed that a heated argument erupted between him and Mumby upon discovering her pregnancy, aggravated by a text message from a female friend related to sports.
According to Daniel’s account, the dispute escalated while driving on Interstate 95 in Florida, with Mumby allegedly driving recklessly. Despite Daniel’s attempts to escape, Mumby accelerated the car to high speeds, eventually crashing into a tree intentionally, as per Daniel’s recollection.
Although Mumby survived with injuries and gave birth, she claimed no memory of the crash. Investigators verified Daniel’s version through the car’s data recorder. Unfortunately, Daniel’s health deteriorated, leading to his passing due to pneumonia in October. Mumby faced charges of vehicular homicide and was arrested.
Daniel’s family, devastated by his loss, is seeking custody of the baby pending a paternity test, aiming to ensure the child knows and remembers her father’s legacy. Mumby has pleaded not guilty to the initial charges but has not entered a plea for the homicide charge.
