In September 2012, Dan Markel, a dedicated father, Canadian-born lawyer, and law professor, was on a business trip. Upon his return to Tallahassee, Florida, he was taken by surprise to find his wife, Wendi, a fellow law professor, and their children missing, accompanied by a significant portion of their belongings. Divorce papers awaited him, signaling the end of their six-year marriage and the beginning of a contentious separation.
Following their divorce in 2013, a joint custody agreement was established despite Wendi’s desire to relocate to Miami, where her wealthy parents resided. However, the court deemed the move too far from Dan, citing the best interest of the children, which displeased the Adelson family.
Wendi’s mother, Donna Adelson, matriarch of a prosperous family with a dental business, allegedly suggested offering Dan $1 million to permit Wendi to move back home. Subsequently, Dan filed for an order preventing unsupervised visits between Donna Adelson and the grandchildren, citing concerns about disparagement towards him and negative influence on the children.
Tragedy struck on July 18, 2014, when Dan was fatally shot outside his home. Investigations linked the crime to the Adelson family, leading to the arrest of three individuals in 2016. Katherine Magbanua, with ties to a criminal gang, orchestrated the murder, hiring Sigfredo Garcia and Luis Rivera to carry out the act.
Rivera, the driver during the shooting, confessed to his involvement and received a reduced sentence after pleading guilty. The trio’s connection to Charles Adelson was established, leading to further arrests. Magbanua and Charles had a past relationship, with Magbanua being on the Adelson family’s payroll despite not working at the dental practice. In 2022, Magbanua was sentenced to life, while Garcia received life in prison without parole.
Charles Adelson faced trial in 2023, where Wendi testified against him, detailing her parents’ displeasure with Dan and Charles’s alleged involvement. Charles claimed innocence, stating he was coerced into paying Magbanua post-murder. However, evidence suggested his active participation in the conspiracy.
Charles was convicted of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation, receiving a life sentence. Subsequently, Donna Adelson was arrested for her purported role as the mastermind behind the murder plot. Despite maintaining her innocence, Adelson was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison in 2023.
The resolution brought closure to a decade-long case, shedding light on the elaborate scheme that captivated public interest. Wendi and her father were not implicated in the crime.
