“BT Announces Retirement of Landline Copper Cables: Upgrade to Digital Voice Urged”

Date:

BT has announced an important update regarding landline services, signaling a significant shift for households relying on this traditional technology. The aging copper cables that have facilitated communication for more than a century are slated for retirement within a year, with the official shutdown scheduled for January 31, 2027.

This transition necessitates millions of users to migrate to modern digital services that leverage internet connectivity for making calls to acquaintances. BT emphasizes the necessity of this shift, citing the outdated copper infrastructure’s inefficiency, unreliability, and incapacity to meet contemporary connectivity demands.

The telecom giant introduces Digital Voice as the latest system, promising enhanced reliability and additional features such as improved call quality, call forwarding to mobile devices, and enhanced call screening capabilities to combat scams and unwanted solicitations. While over three million UK households have already adopted Digital Voice, many others still need to make the switch.

In a proactive message to Mirror Online, BT urges customers to take action promptly, emphasizing that ignoring communications from their provider could lead to disruptions in phone and broadband services as the deadline approaches. With copper wires making way for newer technologies, it is imperative for users to ensure their landline setups are prepared for the upcoming change.

Switching to digital services is relatively straightforward, with compatibility for many existing BT handsets. Most users can retain their current phone numbers, and pricing remains consistent without any additional charges for going digital. In most cases, transitioning involves connecting the home phone to the broadband hub instead of the traditional wall socket. For more complex setups, contacting the provider or scheduling an engineer visit may be necessary.

BT advises customers with special requirements, such as users of telecare devices or pendant alarms, to inform the provider promptly to arrange tailored support. Individuals uncertain about their transition status are encouraged to verify and ensure their homes are ready before the copper network is decommissioned.

“Allison Kirkby, BT Group Chief Executive, underscores the importance of upgrading the UK’s digital infrastructure to deliver modern, secure, and robust connectivity for all. She highlights that outdated infrastructure hinders progress in homes, businesses, and digital access. BT’s substantial investments in infrastructure aim to foster growth and opportunities by connecting people, businesses, and communities to robust digital networks.”
