“Japan’s Iconic Double-Decker Bridge Wows Tourists”

Date:

A remarkable double-decker bridge connects five islands, creating an awe-inspiring sight as it reaches skyward. The Seto Ohashi Bridge, a two-tiered structure, serves as a vital link between Japan’s main island, Honshu, and Shikoku, overlooking the scenic Seto Inland Sea. Construction on this marvel began in 1978, with public access granted over a decade later. The bridge has significantly reduced travel time across the Seto Inland Sea, cutting down the previous hour-long ferry journey to just 20 minutes.

Beyond its engineering prowess, the bridge has become a popular tourist attraction. Enthusiasts gather at spots like the Seto Ohashi Memorial Park to witness the bridge’s majestic presence as it reaches into the sky and stretches into the distance. The park offers various amenities for visitors, including gift shops, a rooftop viewing deck, Japanese gardens, and a children’s playground. Additionally, the illuminated bridge offers captivating views after nightfall.

From a sheer statistics perspective, the Seto Ohashi Bridge is extraordinary. Spanning 13.1 kilometers (8.1 miles) in total length, with the longest segment being the 1,100-meter Minami Bisan-Seto Bridge, it accommodates two lanes of motorway traffic on the upper level and a railway line on the lower level in both directions.

The construction of the bridge was a massive endeavor, taking a decade to complete at a cost of US$7 billion (£5.3 billion). The project utilized 3.646 million cubic meters of concrete and 705,000 tonnes of steel. Unfortunately, the construction also resulted in a tragic toll, with 17 workers losing their lives during the construction period. Today, the Seto Ohashi Bridge stands as the world’s longest combined railway and road bridge.

For those fascinated by architectural marvels, the bridge is easily accessible by flying into Tokyo and taking a train to Okayama. Visitors can get up close to the bridge via train, bus, or car, with convenient transportation options available from Takamatsu and Okayama.

Various points of interest along the bridge offer unique experiences to visitors:

– Seijima, once an island now connected to Shikoku, is a charming spot known for cultural traditions, festivals, and sea bream fishing.
– Shamijima, also formerly an island, boasts a picturesque beach and the Seto Ohashi Memorial Park.
– The Ogoshi district, located east of Sakaide City, offers stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea from the slopes of Goshikidai Mountain.
– Kagawa Prefecture, south of Shikoku, is a vibrant region renowned for its famous Sanuki udon noodles with a chewy texture.

Visitors can explore these diverse attractions and experience the rich culture and natural beauty surrounding the Seto Ohashi Bridge.
