“Key Suspect in Madeleine McCann Case Granted Travel Freedom”

Date:

A key suspect linked to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann will now have the freedom to travel abroad following a recent legal ruling in Germany. Christian Brueckner, who was released from prison in September after serving time for a 2005 rape case in Portugal, had a condition overturned by a German court that previously required him to stay in his home country.

Although never formally charged in Madeleine’s case, Brueckner is the primary person of interest in both German and British investigations surrounding her disappearance. Despite requests from UK authorities, he declined to cooperate with the Metropolitan Police upon his release. Reports suggest he refused therapy during his incarceration and a psychiatric evaluation indicated a likelihood of reoffending.

Madeleine went missing in 2007 from Praia da Luz when she was just three years old, sparking an ongoing international investigation. Following his release, Brueckner was subject to certain restrictions such as wearing an electronic monitoring device for five years, regular contact with probation officers, and surrendering his passport. However, the court’s recent decision lifted the residency requirement in Germany while maintaining other conditions.

Numerous search efforts by German, Portuguese, and British authorities have been conducted since Madeleine’s disappearance, including a recent operation near Lagos, Portugal. Investigative activities in 2023 near the Barragem do Arade reservoir, an area Brueckner frequented, revealed photos and videos of him in the vicinity.

In a separate case, Brueckner was acquitted of alleged sexual offenses in Portugal from 2000 to 2017. The funding for Operation Grange, the Met’s ongoing investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance, has exceeded £13.2 million since its inception in 2011, with additional government funding secured in April.
