“Virgin Media Advises on Maximizing Internet Speeds”

Date:

Virgin Media has shared valuable tips to ensure consistent internet speeds throughout the year. While common practices like placing the router centrally, rebooting it monthly, and avoiding signal obstructions such as fish tanks can enhance performance, changing weather conditions can also impact connectivity.

As temperatures increase in late spring and summer, routers may face additional strain. Therefore, it is crucial to keep them in cool, well-ventilated locations to prevent performance issues.

Virgin Media highlighted the effects of warmer weather on broadband speeds, stating, “High temperatures can stress broadband equipment, both indoors and outdoors.

“While external devices are built to withstand heat, indoor routers may struggle if exposed to excessive warmth.

“Routers require proper airflow for optimal functioning. Placing your Hub behind a TV, in a confined space, near a heat source, or in direct sunlight can lead to heat accumulation, especially during a heatwave. This can result in slower speeds, dropped connections, or automatic restarts for cooling.”

Hence, it is advisable to keep the router in cooler surroundings during warmer periods. While hot weather can affect performance, other weather conditions are less likely to disrupt internet activities like streaming.

Virgin Media emphasized that most weather-related broadband issues originate indoors.

“Factors such as thick walls, numerous connected devices, and improper Hub placement often have a more significant impact on daily connections than external weather conditions,” the company stated.

To optimize Wi-Fi performance, position your Hub in a central, unobstructed area away from direct sunlight. Additionally, avoid placing the router near large metal objects or behind furniture.

After severe weather, it is essential to check the condition of cables. Virgin Media recommended ensuring that cables are secure and undamaged following storms or strong winds.

Furthermore, reducing interference by limiting the number of connected devices simultaneously can help maintain a stable connection.
