“Global Leaders Caution Ukraine Against Yielding Territory”

Date:

Ukraine has been cautioned against yielding territory or reducing its military strength by Donald Trump. At the G20 summit in South Africa, global leaders convened urgent discussions on Ukraine and opposed certain aspects of the US President’s peace proposal.

A collective statement endorsed by Keir Starmer and other G7 leaders, excluding the US, emphasized the importance of maintaining Ukraine’s borders without coercion. The Prime Minister mentioned his upcoming conversation with Mr. Trump and Starmer’s anticipated dialogue with Volodymyr Zelensky later that evening.

There are no plans for the PM to visit Washington DC as the focus shifts to critical talks in Geneva the following day. Notably, officials from the US and Ukraine are scheduled for urgent discussions in Switzerland on Sunday, with special envoys from the US president and the US secretary of state set to participate.

The UK’s National Security Adviser, Jonathan Powell, will participate in the Geneva talks following an early departure from the G20 summit. Counterparts from France and Germany are also slated to attend the discussions.

Trump has set a strict deadline of November 27 for Ukraine to respond to his 28-point peace plan, which includes provisions for an immediate ceasefire and territorial concessions to Russia. However, concerns have been raised by Starmer and the Coalition of the Willing at the G20 regarding the proposal’s impact on Ukraine’s armed forces and territorial integrity.

Despite these reservations, the statement issued by a coalition of nations expressed support for elements of the plan essential for achieving lasting peace in Ukraine. President Zelensky, in a video address, affirmed Ukraine’s commitment to safeguarding its national interests and preventing further aggression from Russia.

Zelensky acknowledged the gravity of the situation, describing it as one of the nation’s most challenging moments. Trump, on the other hand, emphasized the need for Ukraine to respond promptly to the peace plan, indicating a possible extension to the deadline.

Russian President Vladimir Putin cautiously welcomed the US proposal as a potential foundation for a final peace settlement. The statement issued by a coalition of nations reiterated unwavering support for Ukraine and emphasized the importance of sustainable peace negotiations.
