“Fodor’s 2026 ‘Red List’ Warns British Travelers of Unsustainable Destinations”

Date:

British travelers are advised to steer clear of seven destinations in the upcoming year. Despite the joy of travel, the negative impacts can be significant if not managed properly. Issues such as overcrowding, strained public transport, soaring housing costs, and carbon emissions from air travel make globe-trotting in 2026 a challenge without leaving a substantial environmental footprint.

Annually, the renowned American travel publication Fodor’s compiles a ‘red list’ of destinations that should be avoided due to unsustainable tourism practices. The purpose of this list is to draw attention to locations where tourism is placing undue pressure on the environment and local communities, aiming to encourage a temporary pause in visiting these sites for their own well-being.

Among the destinations highlighted this year is Isola Sacra, a coastal area near Rome known for its ancient Roman Necropolis and picturesque coastline. The region has experienced rapid development, including the approval of a large port project, leading to concerns about environmental impact and community disruption.

The Canary Islands, a popular winter sun destination for British tourists, have also made the list due to issues related to overtourism, including protests and airport delays. The negative effects of tourism on the islands have sparked public outcry and calls for more sustainable practices.

Antarctica, known for its pristine environment and unique wildlife, faces challenges with increasing visitor numbers and potential threats to its fragile ecosystem. Conservation efforts are in place to protect the continent and its inhabitants, but concerns about the impact of tourism continue to grow.

Glacier National Park in the US is experiencing rapid glacier retreat due to climate change, leading to a surge in last-chance tourism and increased pressure on the park’s infrastructure and wildlife. Similar challenges are seen in the Jungfrau region of Switzerland, where booming tourism is straining natural resources and affecting local communities.

Mexico City and Kenya are also grappling with issues related to tourism, including protests against gentrification and overcrowding in urban areas. In Kenya, coastal cities like Mombasa are particularly at risk due to overtourism, leading to concerns about environmental degradation and the loss of local charm.

These destinations serve as reminders of the importance of responsible travel and sustainable tourism practices to preserve the beauty and integrity of our world’s most cherished locations.
