Rachel Reeves plans to invest millions of pounds in playgrounds during the upcoming Budget session. The Chancellor is expected to allocate £18 million for the refurbishment of 200 children’s play areas nationwide that have been neglected in the past. The funding will primarily target deprived areas to enhance community spaces for children.
According to a source from the Treasury, this initiative aims to rejuvenate play areas across England, providing safe and engaging environments for thousands of children. It is designed to empower communities by ensuring every child has access to recreational areas for play and growth, regardless of their location.
A recent report by the Raising the National Play Commission emphasized the importance of outdoor play and highlighted the closure of numerous playgrounds. The report revealed that approximately 400 playgrounds were shut down in England between 2012 and 2022, with many existing ones falling into disrepair due to inadequate maintenance. Moreover, it raised concerns that two million children do not reside within a 10-minute walk of a playground.
Eugene Minogue, the Executive Director of Play England, welcomed the funding for playgrounds as a positive step forward, signaling a renewed focus on play in government agendas. He emphasized the unequal distribution of playground facilities across England, particularly in deprived areas. Minogue stressed the significance of ensuring equitable access to play areas for all children, highlighting the potential for significant and lasting positive changes with the implementation of a new national play strategy.
Labour MP Tom Hayes, who chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Play, expressed satisfaction with the increased attention given to playgrounds by MPs and the government. He emphasized the importance of providing safe, enjoyable, and inclusive play spaces for every child, underscoring the commitment to building stronger and more vibrant communities through such investments. Hayes contrasted the current approach with the previous government’s neglect of playgrounds, suggesting that prioritizing these areas contributes to a more engaging and inclusive political landscape.
