A homeless individual recounted a terrifying incident where an assailant viciously attacked him, resulting in the loss of one of his eyes. The attacker, identified as Rudy Eugene, assaulted Ronald Poppo in Miami, Florida, after behaving erratically and violently near a causeway. Eugene proceeded to strangle Poppo, claw at his eyes, and brutally mutilate his face. Poppo described the attacker as initially appearing friendly before turning violent without any apparent provocation.
Despite pleas from law enforcement, Eugene continued his assault on Poppo until he was fatally shot by the police. Speculations arose that Eugene might have been under the influence of dangerous drugs like bath salts; however, toxicology reports revealed only the presence of marijuana in his system. Eugene’s family attested that he was typically non-violent and only consumed cannabis, expressing confusion over the sudden violent outburst.
In a surprising turn, Eugene’s girlfriend suggested supernatural influences behind the attack, denying that his actions were typical of his character. Following the incident, Poppo underwent extensive reconstructive surgery, and a foundation was established in his honor, raising substantial funds for his recovery.
