A significant rail travel sale is about to start this month, offering discounts of up to 50% on a wide range of popular routes operated by various train companies.
The Great British Rail Sale is returning to make train journeys more cost-effective, featuring millions of reduced-price tickets. Scheduled from January 6 to January 12, 2026, the week-long sale provides a chance to secure discounted fares with savings exceeding 50% on advance and off-peak tickets.
These discounted fares are applicable for travel on numerous routes from January 13 to March 25, 2026. With nearly all train operators participating and routes spanning the UK, it’s an ideal opportunity to book whether for a city break, daily commute, or during school holidays.
Some of the highlighted deals include £10 fares from South Coast destinations like Portsmouth to London Waterloo, offering a substantial 59% discount. Travelers from Exeter to London Waterloo can also enjoy a remarkable 76% price reduction with ticket prices slashed from £41.70 to just £10.
In other promotions, a 50% discount is up for grabs on the London Marylebone to Birmingham Moor Street route, with tickets priced at a mere £7. Additionally, passengers can benefit from reduced fares from Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester Airport, costing only £1.20 instead of the usual £2.90.
Heidi Alexander, the Transport Secretary, expressed, “The Rail Sale is back, providing further savings for passengers as we freeze rail fares for the first time in 30 years to alleviate the cost of living. Cheaper rail travel is a common desire, and this sale offers significant reductions for various travel purposes, aligning with our goal of creating a public-owned railway system that serves the public.”
This marks the fourth year of the Great British Rail Sale, where travelers saved around £8 per trip last year, resulting in over a million tickets sold. The government aims to boost train usage to reduce carbon emissions and free up road space for emergency vehicles and freight.
Jacqueline Starr, the executive chairperson and CEO of Rail Delivery Group, stated, “The Rail Sale provides more incentives for people to opt for rail travel, whether for reconnecting with loved ones or exploring new destinations. Rail remains a crucial part of millions of lives, supporting local economies and offering a sustainable mode of transportation.”
She added, “This year’s Rail Sale will offer discounted advance fares across the network from January 6, allowing customers to save on various journeys. By enhancing accessibility to rail travel, we hope to attract more individuals to experience the convenience and comfort of train travel.”
