“UK Homes Urged to Prepare for Digital Voice Upgrade”

A significant change in the way many people in the UK make phone calls is on the horizon, urging homeowners to take action before an approaching deadline. The traditional copper landlines, which have served as the foundation for connectivity for years, are being phased out to make way for new technology known as Digital Voice. This upgrade utilizes broadband for communication with loved ones.

The transition is not just a necessity to keep up with modern demands but also promises enhanced reliability and introduces new capabilities such as improved call clarity, call forwarding to smartphones, and enhanced call screening to combat scams and unwanted marketing messages.

Scheduled to take effect from January 2027, the comprehensive overhaul is prompting BT to launch an awareness campaign. Spearheaded by Clare Balding, the campaign, “Don’t Put Off the Switch,” aims to prompt households to inspect their landlines and ensure readiness for the digital era.

This initiative coincides with recent research revealing that Britons tend to procrastinate essential tasks, often assuming that as long as something is functional, there is no rush to act.

Clare Balding emphasized the importance of responding promptly to communications from service providers to ensure uninterrupted landline services. BT reassures customers that they are not alone and will guide them through the transition process.

Customers are assured that they are likely to retain their phone numbers, and costs are expected to remain stable during the shift. Most households will simply need to connect their current phone to the broadband hub rather than the traditional wall socket, without requiring a visit from engineers.

In cases where issues arise, contacting the service provider may be necessary to resolve any connectivity challenges. BT’s Consumer Digital Voice Director, Lucy Baker, underscored the significance of heeding communications from service providers to maintain essential connections during the transition to digital landlines.

BT also advises customers with special needs, such as users of telecare devices or pendant alarms, to notify their provider promptly for tailored support arrangements.

Digital Voice, BT’s innovative home phone service, operates on broadband technology, eliminating the need for copper connections. It offers modern features like Multi Call for conference calls, three-way calling, and call diversion to various phone numbers, including mobile devices.

The superior call quality of Digital Voice eliminates issues like crackling conversations, provided users have a compatible Digital Home phone. Upgrading to Digital Voice for most households will not alter their phone usage habits, as the cost of the service is bundled with their broadband package, with no additional charges for Digital Voice features.
