MPs, along with animal welfare advocates, are calling for the release of 15 penguins believed to be confined in a basement without access to sunlight or fresh air at the Sea Life London Aquarium. The captivity of these gentoo penguins near Parliament has sparked outrage, with politicians from various parties signing an open letter urging an immediate assessment of the birds’ well-being.
The aquarium, owned by Merlin Entertainments, introduced 10 gentoo penguins from Edinburgh Zoo in 2011. Campaigners claim these penguins have been living in the basement for 14 years in substandard conditions, including a shallow pool. Concerned individuals have reached out to Emma Reynolds MP, asking for the penguins to be relocated to a more suitable environment that aligns with their natural needs.
Labour MP David Taylor emphasized the inhumane treatment of the penguins, stating that it is not in line with British values to deprive animals of essential elements like daylight and fresh air. The campaign has gained support from musician Feargal Sharkey, who challenged the aquarium’s CEO to experience the penguins’ living conditions firsthand.
In response, a spokesperson from Merlin Entertainments defended the penguins’ living conditions, stating that the enclosure on the ground floor replicates their natural habitat. They emphasized the care provided by a team of experts ensuring the penguins’ health and well-being.
Despite these assurances, a petition by Freedom For Animals urging the relocation of the penguins has garnered significant public support. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has acknowledged the concerns, affirming their commitment to upholding high animal welfare standards, including those for gentoo penguins in zoos.
