Tragic Deaths of Five Tourists in Chilean Patagonia

Date:

Five tourists, including a British woman, were tragically found dead in Chilean Patagonia, as confirmed by local authorities. The bodies were discovered in Torres del Paine National Park following a severe snowstorm with wind speeds exceeding 120mph. The victims also included two Mexican nationals and two German nationals. The group reportedly got lost near the park’s remote Los Perros camp, accessible only by a several-hour trek from the nearest vehicle-accessible point.

Efforts are underway to evacuate the bodies via Air Force helicopter once weather conditions permit, with the area currently closed off. Torres del Paine, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1978, attracts numerous visitors each year, with over 360,000 tourists exploring its mountainous terrain in 2023.

In response to the incident, the Foreign Office spokesperson stated, “We are in contact with the local authorities regarding the situation in Chile.” This tragic event follows a recent avalanche in the Alps that claimed the lives of three tourists and left two others missing. The avalanche occurred in Italy’s Ortles Mountain range, triggered in the South Tyrol region.
