Brian David Steckel, a convicted rapist and murderer, maintained clear and coherent speech for several minutes following a lethal injection procedure. The 36-year-old American, known for the brutal rape and murder of Sandra Lee Long, managed to communicate calmly with his family and witnesses as the lethal drugs took effect in his body.
Witnesses at the execution reported hearing distinct sounds from the injection machine and observed convulsions, suggesting a possible malfunction of the drugs. Despite this, Delaware officials asserted that the execution progressed as planned, explaining the extended duration as a provision for Steckel to deliver his final statements.
In his last words, Steckel expressed regret and readiness for his punishment, stating, “I walked in here without a fight, and I accept my punishment. It is time to go. I love you people… I’m at peace.” Steckel’s heinous crime involved the rape and murder of Sandra Lee Long in Wilmington, Delaware in 1994.
Steckel lured Long into her apartment under false pretenses, and when she rejected his advances, he violently attacked her, attempting to strangle her before sexually assaulting her. The assailant then set Long and the room on fire, resulting in her death from smoke inhalation and severe burns.
Following the horrific incident, Steckel continued his disturbing behavior by taunting authorities as the self-proclaimed “Driftwood Killer,” making threats to potential victims and the local media. He was eventually apprehended while intoxicated on a harassment warrant, where he confessed to the crime.
At his trial, Steckel was found guilty on multiple counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to death. During the sentencing phase, he acknowledged his wrongdoing, admitting, “I ask you to hold me accountable for what I did… I know what I did was wrong: it was selfish [and] despicable.”
