A man known as the Connecticut Cannibal, Tyree Smith, horrifically killed a homeless man named Angel Gonzalez in 2011. Smith brutally murdered Gonzalez with a hatchet, consumed parts of his brain and eyeball, and later confessed to his cousin about the gruesome act. Smith was deemed not guilty of murder by reason of insanity and was confined to Whiting Forensic Hospital for 60 years in 2013.
Recently, the state’s Psychiatric Security Review Board granted Smith conditional release from the hospital based on reports stating that his schizophrenia and substance abuse disorders were under control due to medication and treatment. He was placed under strict supervision in a community setting, with ongoing treatment requirements.
Despite claims of Smith’s positive behavior in the new setting, prison records reveal altercations with other inmates. Gonzalez’s sister-in-law expressed concern, labeling Smith as a danger to society. Smith apologized for his actions in court, expressing remorse for the tragic incident. Gonzalez’s family members reacted emotionally to Smith’s apology, highlighting the impact of the violent crime.
