The Ogun and Lagos State Governments issued a joint statement regarding the recent car accident involving Anthony Joshua in Nigeria. The former heavyweight champion sustained minor injuries in a fatal collision that resulted in the loss of two lives.
In their official statement, the Ogun and Lagos State Governments confirmed that Anthony Joshua, the British-Nigerian two-time unified world heavyweight boxing champion, was involved in a road traffic incident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The accident occurred when the vehicle carrying a team of four collided with a stationary truck, leading to the tragic fatalities.
Both governments expressed their deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased and prayed for strength during this difficult time. Anthony Joshua and another passenger were swiftly taken to a specialized medical facility in Lagos, where medical professionals confirmed their stable condition without the need for emergency interventions.
A dedicated medical team is closely monitoring Joshua and the other passenger, with the governments ensuring the provision of top-notch medical care. Investigations into the accident’s circumstances have commenced, while privacy for Joshua and his family has been requested.
The statement was endorsed by Kayode Akinmade, the Special Adviser on Media to the Governor of Ogun State, and Gbenga Omotoso, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy for Lagos State. Joshua was traveling in a black Lexus Jeep when the collision occurred, involving a stationary red commercial Sinotruck.
The Federal Road Safety Corps of Nigeria reported that the crash involved five adult males, resulting in two fatalities and injuries to one person, with Joshua sustaining minor injuries. The injured individual received medical attention, and the deceased were taken to Livewell Morgue, Ajaka, Sagamu, while the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division was informed for further investigation.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the speeding Lexus Jeep lost control during an overtaking maneuver, crashing into the parked truck by the roadside.
