The boxing community is in mourning after the tragic passing of 25-year-old Paul McCullagh Junior, a rising star from Belfast. Known for his accomplishments in the amateur circuit, McCullagh held the Ulster Elite heavyweight title in 2019 and proudly represented Ireland in international competitions.
With a professional record of two wins, McCullagh, nicknamed ‘The Irish Drago’, showcased his skills at both the St. John Bosco club in West Belfast and his family’s McCullagh’s ABC in Dunmurry.
Hailing from a boxing lineage, McCullagh was the grandson of the esteemed Belfast boxing coach Paul McCullagh, who mentored boxing legends like Barry McGuigan and Hugh Russell. His father, also named Paul, is a respected professional referee and a former champion amateur boxer.
The Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the talented young boxer, highlighting McCullagh’s achievements and contributions to the sport. Aidan Walsh, a former teammate, and Jonathan O’Brien, his trainer, shared heartfelt tributes to McCullagh, remembering him fondly.
The Belfast boxing community also joined in honoring McCullagh’s memory, acknowledging his impact and offering condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues at St. John Bosco boxing club. The passing of McCullagh has left a profound void in the hearts of those who knew and admired him.
