In response to a recent incident where a Russian spy ship attempted to blind British pilots with lasers, a defense expert has called for the RAF to be prepared to retaliate with laser weapons. The Defence Secretary, John Healey, disclosed that the Yantar ship targeted RAF P-8 planes with laser beams while being monitored near UK waters in Scotland. The vessel is suspected of surveying crucial underwater cables responsible for transmitting a significant portion of the UK’s telecommunications data. In a stern message directed at the Kremlin, Healey cautioned Vladimir Putin that the UK is vigilant and prepared for any potential escalation.
According to Professor Anthony Glees, who commended Healey for his resolute stance, the UK needs to respond more promptly to provocations from Russia. Glees emphasized the importance of demonstrating a strong stance and taking decisive action against such aggressions. He raised concerns about the potential threats posed by the Yantar’s activities, including mapping underwater cables critical to UK’s infrastructure and monitoring nuclear submarines.
Glees linked the Yantar’s actions to a broader pattern of escalating Russian provocations across Europe, citing incidents such as drone incursions, airspace violations in Estonia, sabotage in Ukraine, and espionage activities in the UK. This marks the second time this year that the Yantar has encroached into UK waters, raising alarms within the defense establishment about Russia’s intentions.
While the Russian embassy claims the Yantar is a research vessel operating in international waters, the UK remains prepared with military options should the ship venture further south. Former MI6 chief Sir Richard Dearlove suggested the possibility of firing a warning shot if the Yantar approaches too close, although caution was advised to avoid unnecessary confrontations.
