“Sky Launches Real Time Feature to Reduce Streaming Delays”

Date:

Sky is set to launch a new feature called Real Time, aimed at reducing streaming delays for millions of Sky users, just in time for the upcoming World Cup. The Real Time upgrade is designed to address the frustration sports fans often experience due to significant streaming latency, particularly noticeable when compared to traditional broadcasting services like BBC iPlayer and ITVX.

Initially introduced for Premier League matches in 2024, Real Time is now being expanded to include BBC and ITV coverage, making it available for major events such as the World Cup. According to a statement by Sky, the new feature will bring live sports closer to real-time by minimizing the delay between live action and on-screen viewing.

To activate Real Time during supported live sports broadcasts, viewers can select the Real Time option on their screens. The feature is accessible on Sky Glass and Sky Stream devices through an opt-in button or specific channels like BBC One HD RT, ITV1 HD RT, and ITV4 HD RT.

Sky’s shift towards internet-based services like Sky Glass and Sky Stream signifies a departure from the satellite-based Sky Q platform. These services operate over broadband, offering advantages such as easy self-installation, regular software updates, and seamless integration with popular streaming platforms like Netflix, Apple TV+, and Disney+.

As Sky focuses on internet-delivered television and enhanced streaming experiences, Sky Glass and Sky Stream remain central to the company’s strategic direction. This update is significant in shaping the future of Sky’s streaming services and ensuring a more seamless viewing experience for its customers.
