“Bhopal Tragedy: Catastrophic Prophecy Unfolds”

Date:

A journalist in Bhopal raised a warning about the imminent danger of a volcanic catastrophe, drawing attention to the grim reality faced by the community. The chilling narrative, penned by Raj Keswani in the local newspaper Jansatta, highlighted the tragic death of Ashraf Khan at the Union Carbide factory due to a phosgene spill, a lethal gas used during World War One.

Despite the ominous forewarning, the catastrophic prophecy unfolded two years later with one of the most devastating industrial tragedies witnessed globally at the same factory. An unexpected malfunction at a US-owned pesticide plant unleashed 40 tonnes of highly toxic methyl isocyanate gas into a densely populated urban area, resulting in the deaths of thousands.

The initial exposure to the gas claimed the lives of 3,500 individuals instantly, subjecting them to excruciating symptoms such as lung failure, kidney damage, and severe organ deterioration. The dense, colorless gas spread like a sinister fog over the city, disproportionately affecting women and children due to their heightened susceptibility.

The aftermath of the disaster left over 200,000 children and 3,000 pregnant women impacted, leading to immediate miscarriages and long-term health issues. The survivors and their families embarked on a 30-year quest for justice in the wake of the catastrophic event.

The Bhopal tragedy occurred on December 3, 1984, at the Union Carbide factory, which had a history of safety lapses and accidents resulting from negligence. The series of errors culminated in a fatal gas leak that claimed thousands of lives due to a delayed response and inadequate safety measures.

The repercussions of the disaster continue to haunt the community, with ongoing health complications, including blindness, respiratory problems, cancer, and reproductive issues among survivors. Despite efforts to seek accountability and compensation, the pursuit of justice remains a prolonged battle for the victims and their advocates against corporate negligence and legal obstacles.
