NATO had to deploy military aircraft for the second time in three nights following Russia’s aggressive overnight attacks on Ukraine, striking civilians near allied territory. The fresh assaults occurred amid ongoing discussions in Geneva to broker a US-led peace agreement acceptable to both Russia and Ukraine. Despite efforts for peace talks, Vladimir Putin has shown no inclination to end the conflict. Additionally, a top NATO general cautioned that Moscow is facilitating the trafficking of drugs and migrants from Africa to destabilize Western nations.
In the latest incidents, Russia carried out significant strikes on Ukraine overnight, resulting in the tragic death of a mother of two in Kharkiv. Natalya, who was visiting her sister in the Shevchenkivskyi district, was killed in a drone strike that claimed four lives and left 17 others injured. Her son, Oleksandr Balaklytskyi, recounted her final moments, expressing her fear as the attack unfolded.
Among the wounded was 77-year-old Volodymyr Kravtsov, who narrowly escaped the devastation caused by the drone strike. The strikes not only caused physical harm but also instilled fear and destruction in the area.
NATO responded to the escalating situation by dispatching fighters after new drone strikes targeted Izmail, a strategic Ukrainian port on the River Danube bordering Romania, a NATO member. The Romanian Air Force confirmed the deployment of two Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft to monitor the airspace. Subsequently, additional drones were detected near Snake Island in the Black Sea, prompting the scrambling of two F-16 fighters by the Romanian Air Force to address the threat.
The Romanian authorities condemned Russia for its drone attacks on civilian areas and port facilities in Ukraine, emphasizing the proximity of the attacks to Romanian territory across the Danube. The assaults extended to Chernihiv, where residential areas were hit, causing injuries and damage.
