Government Postpones Asylum Seeker Military Barracks Relocation

Date:

Plans to relocate asylum seekers to military barracks have been postponed to prevent a recurrence of the chaos experienced at Bibby Stockholm. The government had aimed to transfer hundreds of individuals to Cameron Barracks in Inverness and Crowborough Training Camp in East Sussex while their asylum claims were being processed to reduce reliance on hotels.

However, due to safety concerns, the government is now expected to miss its December 1 deadline. Rushing the relocation process could lead to similar issues encountered under the previous administration. Previous attempts by the Tories to house asylum seekers at the RAF Scampton site resulted in significant financial losses for the Home Office.

A Home Office spokesperson expressed frustration over the high number of illegal migrants and asylum hotels. They emphasized the importance of moving individuals to larger military sites as part of efforts to address illegal migration and the factors attracting individuals to the UK.

The government is working to expedite the relocation to Crowborough and Cameron Barracks once these sites are fully operational and safe. Learning from past mistakes, they aim to avoid rushed plans that have previously led to unsafe and disorderly situations impacting local communities.

Opposition leader Keir Starmer criticized the previous government for the asylum system’s mismanagement, describing it as a “huge mess.” Cameron Barracks and Crowborough Training Camp were previously utilized to accommodate Afghans during the Kabul withdrawal in 2021.

A recent report highlighted wastage of billions of pounds on costly contracts due to leadership failures under the previous government. The Bibby Stockholm barge, previously used to house asylum seekers, had to be shut down temporarily due to health hazards onboard.

Following the death of Albanian asylum seeker Leonard Farruku, a study by charities revealed that many onboard the Bibby Stockholm barge were struggling with mental health issues.
