Los Angeles County’s grand jury has formally charged Nick Reiner with murder in the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, and has added the accusation that he intentionally ambushed them before the attack. The grand jury, which had been convening in private, issued the indictment on July 20, and it was made public on Wednesday when 32-year-old Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty. The couple, Rob Reiner, a renowned director and actor, and his wife, the photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, were fatally stabbed in their residence in the affluent Brentwood area of Los Angeles on December 14. Nick Reiner was apprehended shortly after the incident and formally charged two days later.
The grand jury’s indictment represents a significant advancement towards a trial and permits prosecutors to bypass California’s preliminary hearing stage, where evidence is publicly presented. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman expressed, “This was a severe betrayal by an individual who was cherished and relied upon by the individuals he is accused of murdering.” Hochman hopes that the grand jury’s indictment will bring them closer to a trial and achieving justice.
The recently unsealed indictment discloses minimal new information in a case that has been veiled in secrecy. However, the assertion of lying in wait, along with other circumstances, renders Reiner eligible for the death penalty, although prosecutors have not yet confirmed if they will pursue it. The indictment does not specify the method or reason for Reiner’s lying in wait but includes an allegation that a knife was used in the crime. Many fundamental inquiries regarding the incident remain unanswered publicly, with prosecutors remaining silent on potential motives and leaks from both sides being scarce.
The Los Angeles County chief medical examiner expressed a desire to release the autopsy reports publicly but has been hindered by a court order. Meanwhile, Reiner is in the process of attempting to access funds from a trust established by his parents, citing the necessity for financial assistance in his defense. Reiner’s petition states that the trustees have unjustly denied him access to the funds, which were designated for Nick Reiner even if his parents were alive. The trust reportedly holds at least $1.5 million US in assets, although the exact sum has not been disclosed by the trustees.
An upcoming hearing will address Reiner’s petition to retain high-profile defense attorney Alan Jackson, following a scenario where Reiner’s siblings ceased funding his defense, leading to a public defender taking over. The L.A. County Public Defender’s Office, representing Reiner, declined to comment on the indictment. The legal system in California allows prosecutors to either proceed via a preliminary hearing or opt for a grand jury process conducted in secrecy, as exemplified in Reiner’s case.
