Despite warnings about the dangers of misinformation, residents are relying on images and videos shared online by individuals who chose to remain in the evacuated area near Okanagan Lake. One such individual, an e-bike rider, has been filming the deserted streets of Summerland, providing a sense of relief to worried residents like Kerry Gold.
While acknowledging the evacuees’ concerns, Erick Thompson, the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen’s senior communications manager, expressed his intention to access Summerland’s downtown to provide residents with firsthand information. The provincial government has reported significant property damage from the Bald Range fire, which ravaged homes and the community of Faulder. However, official damage assessments have been delayed due to hazardous conditions.
Authorities, including the RCMP and Forests Minister Ravi Parmar, have cautioned against spreading false information on social media regarding the wildfire’s cause and damage. The City of Penticton, where many evacuees have sought refuge, emphasized the importance of relying on official sources for updates as conditions could change rapidly.
