“Parenting a Child with Severe Allergies: A Journey of Trust and Growth”

Date:

When my son Simon was just 18 months old, I unknowingly gave him a cashew nut. Less than an hour later, we found ourselves rushing through the crowded waiting room at the Winnipeg HSC Children’s Emergency Department as Simon’s face began to swell.

A doctor quickly assessed Simon and confirmed that he was experiencing an anaphylactic reaction, with his throat closing due to a severe cashew and pistachio allergy diagnosis.

Leaving the hospital that day, a part of me remained behind – the part that had never before realized the potential danger lurking in everyday foods for my child. The realization that I would forever be tasked with safeguarding Simon from life-threatening allergens weighed heavily on me.

Attempting to regain a sense of control, I embarked on a mission to educate myself and those around Simon about his condition. Despite attending classes on managing anaphylactic allergies with my husband, Job, I found myself increasingly overwhelmed by fear. This fear led me to become overly protective, hesitant to entrust Simon’s care to anyone else.

Gradually, as Simon grew into a courageous and spirited child, his bravery inspired me to address my mental well-being. I recognized the need to relinquish some control and embrace trust in others for Simon’s well-being. Encouraged by Job’s support, I began allowing Simon more freedom, cautiously extending trust to select parents and friends who understood his allergies.

As Simon matured, I took steps to teach him self-vigilance and self-care. With his growing independence and understanding of his condition, I felt more comfortable entrusting him with greater responsibility. I shared stories of caution and empowerment, emphasizing the importance of self-advocacy and collaboration in ensuring his safety.

This past summer, Simon expressed a desire to attend sleepaway camp for the first time. Despite my initial apprehension, his uncle, the camp director, and his trusted friends offered reassurance. With a clear understanding of his dietary restrictions and safety protocols in place, Simon embarked on this new adventure, marking a significant milestone in our journey of trust and growth.

Embracing the challenges and uncertainties of parenting a child with severe allergies, I have learned to let go, allowing Simon to explore the world with courage and resilience. Each goodbye signifies a step towards independence and resilience for both of us, fostering strength and readiness for the future.
