The top court in Russia has ruled to exclude the sole opposition party that was against the Kremlin’s military involvement in Ukraine from the upcoming parliamentary election. The Supreme Court invalidated the registration of Yabloko, which translates to “apple” in Russian, following a complaint from a pro-Kremlin party. Initially, the Central Election Commission had permitted Yabloko to participate in the election alongside 10 other parties. Yabloko, once a key liberal voice critical of the government, lost its seats in the State Duma as the Kremlin tightened its hold on Russian politics. It was the only opposition party registered that opposed sending troops to Ukraine. The party’s campaign focused on advocating for a ceasefire, diplomacy, peace, and a Russia free from fear and political oppression.
Grigory Yavlinsky, a veteran liberal politician and co-founder of Yabloko, expressed disappointment over the court’s decision and stated that the party would appeal. Yavlinsky emphasized that excluding Yabloko from the election reflects a reluctance to engage in dialogue with those raising uncomfortable questions for the authorities. Noteworthy figures in the Russian opposition, including Yulia Navalnaya, widow of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, and politicians Ilya Yashin and Vladimir Kara-Murza, had urged voters to support Yabloko due to its anti-war stance.
Yabloko chairman Nikolai Rybakov distanced the party from support by Navalnaya and other Kremlin critics living abroad, stating that the party did not initiate the backing in an effort to prevent its removal from the ballot. The decision to initially allow Yabloko on the ballot was seen as an attempt to provide an outlet for discontent among Russians while underscoring the limited support for its position on Ukraine. However, Yabloko’s peace-focused campaign resonated with the public, challenging the Kremlin’s expectations.
The court’s ruling was interpreted by Yavlinsky as underscoring the significance of Yabloko’s platform, reflecting the public’s strong demand for peace and freedom. Kremlin-aligned parties criticized Yabloko for its opposition to the military action in Ukraine, with some calling for investigations into the party. The Motherland Party filed a lawsuit demanding Yabloko’s expulsion from the ballot, alleging copyright violations, campaign spending excesses, and unlawful advocacy against Russia’s territorial integrity.
Yabloko has faced increased government pressure in recent years, with prominent members being jailed or labeled as “foreign agents.” These actions are part of a broader crackdown on dissent by the Kremlin, reminiscent of Soviet-era tactics. Notable members of Yabloko have faced legal challenges, including imprisonment and trials on charges related to disseminating false information about the military. Designations as “foreign agents” have also restricted the political participation of some members, reflecting the escalating crackdown on dissent in Russia.
