The union representing WestJet’s cabin crew has disclosed specifics of the recently negotiated agreement with the Calgary-based airline following a brief strike. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) revealed that the deal encompasses an over 18% salary increase spread over three years and introduces a new “duty period premium” to compensate for ground duties. Additionally, it entails extended time off, enhanced food and uniform allowances, and various other benefits.
WestJet had to cancel flights across a significant portion of Canada during the extended holiday weekend due to the looming strike by 4,400 flight attendants who initiated a work stoppage early on a Sunday. However, a tentative agreement was swiftly reached between the airline and the union on Monday morning, leading to a gradual return to normal operations for WestJet.
The cabin crew members are slated to vote on the agreement in the upcoming weeks.
