“Mother and Daughter Share Heartfelt Ornaments Amidst Memories”

Date:

On a snowy November day, in Powell River, B.C., Lana Cullis and her daughter Kit were dividing tree ornaments, each taking their share. Kit, now living independently, wanted her own Christmas tree. Unpacking the ornaments brought back memories of past losses and grief for Lana, who had fostered 23 children over eight years. Many were temporary placements, but their two children came to them through adoption. Surprisingly, Kit remembered the stories behind each handmade ornament, even for those she had never met, and her holiday memories differed from Lana’s.

Among the decorations was a tree topper from Lana’s first Christmas with her husband, now separated. Despite the crack in the angel ornament, Lana offered it to Kit, who joyfully accepted it, reminiscing about wanting to place it atop the tree when she was younger. Another ornament, a Santa sleigh and reindeer made by a foster child years ago, stirred mixed emotions in Lana, as the child was no longer in their care due to a failed court motion for permanency.

As they continued unpacking, Kit noticed the change in Lana’s mood and shared memories associated with the ornaments. Lana reflected on the inclusive Christmas traditions they had established for their foster children, such as holding family dinners on alternate days to accommodate their family visits. Each child received unique ornaments to keep or take with them upon leaving, creating lasting memories.

One ornament, a reindeer made of pompoms, brought back memories of dividing ornaments during Lana’s divorce. Kit expressed appreciation for the consistency of Rudolph on the tree each Christmas, regardless of where they celebrated. This year, as they decorate the tree, Lana anticipates a different experience, guided by Kit’s positive perspective and eager to see her daughter’s tree come to life.
