Returning to his residence after being allowed back following evacuation orders being lifted in around ten French communities affected by wildfires, Frédéric Delbreil expressed his astonishment at the frozen state of everything. Delbreil, a 51-year-old chef at Bistrot La Nautique in Bordeaux, resides in a small hamlet near Saint-Jean-d’Illac, a suburb of the major city in southwestern France. Upon his return, Delbreil noticed a layer of grey ash covering every surface inside his house.
The previous night, Delbreil and his family, along with 144,000 others in France, were permitted to return home. Upon his return, Delbreil discovered items misplaced due to the hurried departure late last Friday night. He described the emotional turmoil of feeling both like smiling and crying simultaneously.
Although the community’s homes were spared, the flames encroached on the outskirts of town as they neared Bordeaux. Delbreil credited the firefighters and water bombing planes for preventing the loss of the 20 homes on his street.
Despite facing displacement, Delbreil’s restaurant has been providing meals to firefighters throughout the week in Saint-Jean-d’Illac. The town’s services director, Charlène Bailleul, mentioned that 80% of the municipal staff had to evacuate their homes.
Reflecting on a week of fires, Bailleul highlighted the need to learn from the experience. She emphasized the importance of transitioning from crisis response to regaining normalcy while preparing for future wildfires. Bailleul also stressed the necessity of forest fire prevention measures, acknowledging the challenges faced due to inadequate national support.
City councillor Caroline Esteve underlined the urgency of focusing on prevention rather than just preparedness. She advocated for changes in forestry practices, proposing the diversification of tree species and cultivation of moisture-rich crops to mitigate fire risk.
As residents returned to the region, the call for long-term prevention measures grew louder. Volunteers, including Katia Rigal, found solace in contributing to the firefighting efforts, highlighting the importance of community support during challenging times.
The volunteer hub in Saint-Jean-d’Illac epitomized the resilience and unity of communities in southwestern France as they grappled with the aftermath of wildfires and worked towards a more sustainable future.
