Winnipeg is set to contend against the Brampton Honey Badgers in the league’s first multi-game championship showdown. The best-of-three series kicks off in Brampton on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET, followed by Game 2 in Winnipeg on Saturday at 3:30 p.m., with a potential Game 3 scheduled for Sunday at the same time.
Notably, Sea Bears guard Teddy Allen, a top contender for the league’s player of the year accolade, was hospitalized following a violent incident at a local nightclub. Additionally, defensive specialist Jeremiah Tilmon Jr. and Winnipeg native Emmanuel Akot departed the team after securing contracts overseas.
With Allen absent, the Sea Bears have adjusted their offensive strategy, with Xavier Moon assuming a significant role in the team’s scoring efforts. Moon emphasized the team’s resilience and unity, highlighting their collective approach to overcoming challenges.
In recent games, Winnipeg showcased their resilience by defeating the Saskatoon Mamba in the opening playoff match and stunning the favored Vancouver Bandits in the Western Conference final. On the Eastern front, the Brampton Honey Badgers, finishing second in the conference with an 11-13 record, overcame the Ottawa BlackJacks and the Niagara River Lions to secure their spot in the championship series. Despite facing the Honey Badgers twice this season and suffering narrow defeats, Raimbault acknowledged their opponents’ strengths and expressed confidence in his team’s preparation.
The upcoming finals will not only showcase a thrilling on-court battle but also an intriguing off-court narrative, as the Sea Bears and the Honey Badgers are both owned by the Asper siblings. David Asper, owner of the Sea Bears, anticipates a closely contested series between the talented teams, raising the question of which team their sister, Gail, will support.
