Artificial intelligence has ventured into content creation with its own TV channel now available on the Roku Channel streaming platform.
Fairground AI Creator TV, offering round-the-clock AI-generated content for free, quietly joined Roku’s lineup without an official announcement from the streaming service. The news was first reported by Cord Cutters News.
However, the introduction of this innovative channel has sparked backlash online, with critics expressing discontent over Roku’s decision. Frank Landymore of Futurism described the channel as “an unending conveyor belt of AI slop,” while Bradly Shankar of MobileSyrup echoed similar sentiments.
Fairground AI operates as a FAST channel, providing free, ad-supported streaming television. Although there are approximately 200 FAST channels on the Roku Channel in Canada, Fairground AI is currently not among them. The company has not disclosed any plans regarding the channel’s availability in Canada.
Roku, a major player in the streaming industry, was acquired by Fox in a multi-billion dollar deal in June, expanding its reach to over 100 million households globally. The introduction of Fairground AI’s channel aligns with the growing trend of AI-generated content across various platforms, with Tribeca Festival featuring an AI-generated movie and Hasbro developing AI-powered character versions.
Colin Petrie-Norris, CEO of Fairground AI, anticipates a similar evolution for the channel as seen with YouTube creators, despite initial skepticism. The move by Roku to incorporate an AI channel reflects a strategic shift in the streaming landscape, aiming to cater to diverse viewer preferences and engagement levels.
As discussions around AI-generated content continue, concerns persist regarding creative control, economic implications for creators, and adherence to copyright and privacy laws.
