“Newfoundland and Labrador witnesses partial solar eclipse”

Date:

On Wednesday afternoon, residents in Newfoundland and Labrador had the opportunity to witness a partial solar eclipse, depending on the weather conditions. Churchill Falls was the initial location to observe the eclipse, beginning at 1:37 AT (2:07 NT). Throughout the afternoon, the eclipse gradually unfolded across the province, with the event expected to conclude in St. John’s at 4:37 p.m. NT. In Newfoundland, observers anticipated that the moon would obscure about half of the sun, although the extent of the eclipse varied by region.

At the Johnson Geo Centre in St. John’s, an enthusiastic crowd gathered to witness the moon passing in front of the sun. Equipped with special safety viewing glasses, the watch party, in collaboration with the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and STEM Girls, lasted from 12 p.m. NT to 5 p.m. Spectators marveled as they watched the celestial event unfold, with astronomer Hiding Neilson from Memorial University describing the scene as the moon “eating the sun up” through his telescope.
