Despite promptly contacting the Stampede, Geiger was informed via email that the 48-hour window to claim his prize had lapsed, rendering him ineligible for the winnings.
The Calgary Stampede, operating under a lottery license from the Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis (AGLC), cited adherence to the rules in denying Geiger’s claim. While Geiger argued that the time limit was not clearly communicated, the Stampede maintained that the regulations were public knowledge. The unclaimed prize funds are stated to be allocated as per AGLC requirements.
Legal expert Farhad Shekib suggested that Geiger might have a case for breach of contract regarding the communication and fairness of the 48-hour window. Shekib emphasized the importance of clear communication to ticket buyers about the terms and timelines for claiming prizes.
