“Stellantis Considers Closure, Sale of Brampton Plant”

Date:

Unifor, a national union, has been informed by Stellantis that there are serious considerations regarding the closure and potential sale of the Brampton Assembly Plant. The union’s president, Lana Payne, revealed that Stellantis shared this information with them earlier in the week, although no formal written notice of closure has been provided as stipulated by their collective agreement.

According to Payne, Stellantis is obligated under the agreement to give the union at least one year’s notice in case of closure or sale of the plant. The company has expressed a desire to engage in discussions with another entity for the potential sale of the facility.

Expressing disappointment, Payne stated, “This news comes as a blow to our union and especially to our dedicated members who have devoted their efforts to this plant.” Stellantis, in a statement, mentioned that they are gearing up for collective bargaining and currently have no announcements to make. Their primary focus remains on securing a sustainable manufacturing solution for the Brampton Assembly plant.

The factory was initially planned to undergo retooling for Jeep Compass production, which commenced in January 2024 but was halted in February 2025. In October 2025, the decision was made to shift the Jeep Compass production from Brampton to the United States, effectively suspending operations at the plant indefinitely.

Unifor emphasized the irreplaceable nature of well-paying union jobs established over decades in the automotive industry. Payne affirmed that they will address this issue during upcoming negotiations with Stellantis, stressing that the situation is unacceptable for both the union and its members.

Vito Beato, president of Unifor Local 1285, vowed to continue the fight to safeguard jobs at the Brampton plant, emphasizing the significance of these roles. The union remains hopeful for a positive outcome in discussions with Stellantis, asserting that closure is not a viable option.

Unifor Local 1285 represents approximately 2,200 members at the Brampton plant, who are currently receiving income security while operations are on hold. The City of Brampton has pledged support for the union and workers at the plant, aiming to preserve automotive manufacturing in the area. The federal government is actively engaging with all stakeholders to protect jobs and ensure continued investment in Canada’s automotive sector.
